For the most-ripped action hero working today, Jason Statham sure gets stuck behind the wheel of a lot of cars. In “Death Race” (an homage to the cult classic “Death Race 2000”), it’s kill or be roadkill. Statham plays an innocent man framed for his wife’s murder and forced to compete in a reality TV show. Joan Allen plays the evil warden with restraint, while Ian McShane (“Deadwood”) must have needed a paycheck to appear as the wise old con who is handy with a wrench. As the rote script shuffles the actors from one contrivance to the next, the auto-carnage starts to blur. The unrated version contains a few more minutes that add nothing to the story. The DVD includes a director commentary and a couple of standard making-of featurettes.
